Things you Should Know About Greta Thunberg

The Greta effect

Physics has the Doppler effect, chemistry has its resonance effect, psychology speaks about the Stockholm effect. What do we environmentalists have? Well, we have our "GRETA EFFECT". Very dramatic beginning I must agree!

Some of you must know what I am talking about but for those, it was not less than a mumbo jumbo.. here's a brief intro to
WHAT IS ACTUALLY THE "GRETA EFFECT"?

Greta Thunberg is a Swedish environmental activist who caught the eye of the world after her famous 'school strike for climate' outside the Sweden parliament to call for the stronger actions against climate change. Her worldwide popularity and influential personality are well explained by THE GUARDIAN ( British daily newspaper) and some other newspapers as "Greta effect."

But wait.. did I tell you how old she is? Well, she's seventeen now. She was fifteen years old when she started her first protest against the government outside the parliament in 2015.
(In our teenage, most of us didn't even know what climate actually means. ).
She's living proof that 'no one is too small to make a difference'. She is a real dose of inspiration and enthusiasm. Here are some things you must know about her!

  • Born on January 03, 2003, She first learnt about climate change when she was eight years old.
  • Since then, she started adopting environment-friendly habits to reduce her carbon foot-prints. She has become vegan and refuses to travel by aeroplane.
  • Greatly affected by very little efforts done by the government towards climate change, she decided to wake up the lawmakers of her country by starting a movement called 'FRIDAYS FOR FUTURE' otherwise known as 'school strike for climate'.
  • Inspired by her actions, many strikes were held in different countries for the same cause.
  • She was invited by various organisations such as the WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT and many more, to speak about climate change.
  • Her "How dare you?" speech at the United Nations' climate change event in New York, caused a stir on the social sites and caught worldwide attention.
  • For this particular event, she travelled all the way to New York City (USA) from Plymouth (UK), by 15 days long carbon-free voyage.
  • Recently she has even been nominated for Nobel peace prize 2019, for her activism against climate change.
  • She has been awarded by various honours such as Time's person of the year (2019), Right Livelihood Award, Ambassador of Conscience Award, International Children's Peace Prize and what not.
  • Her book 'no one is too small to make a difference' consists of a collection of speeches that she gave on several events.

So here was a little inspiration you needed. This 'little one' is presenting herself out there in the world with her 'not so little' efforts.
